This year the NCSSA Convention was held in the Derby City and hosted at the University of Louisville. Throughout the weekend we where introduced to various student sections from across the country from Washington State University to the University of Miami (FL), 17 in total. Colleges and Universities of various sizes were represented from Hope College to the University of Minnesota. While at the NCSSA Convention the attendees where introduced other student sections and learned what has been successful in their programs. In addition, there were presentations on Ethics, Social Media, and Fan Loyalty Rewards Programs. The Convention also provided opportunities for attendees to experience Louisville, including a Louisville Bats baseball game and a visit Churchill Downs. This was a great year and we hope to see many of you next year at the NCSSA Convention. In the meantime, good luck this year in your Student Sections!
The second annual NCSSA Convention held at the University of Cincinnati from June 2nd – June 5th was a major success! 55 student leaders from 25 different schools spanning from University of Arizona to Utah Valley University to University of Florida to University of Central Arkansas converged in Cincinnati to bring new ideas, positive energy, and a fresh outlook to the collegiate fan atmosphere. Speakers included David Coleman (14 time National Speaker of the Year), Lisa Braun (Cincinnati Reds Director of Digital Media), Mike Bohn (University of Cincinnati Athletic Director), and Jon Horton (University of Cincinnati Assistant Athletic Director for Game Presentation). The discussions and learning that took place during the day was directly turned into action at a Cincinnati Reds game and a FC Cincinnati game, where we were on the Jumbotron multiple times for creating an energetic environment. The ideas exchanged at the convention will create change across the entire collegiate athletic landscape, and the friendships made over the course of a weekend will last a lifetime. We thank all who attended this year and look forward to what the next convention will bring.
"I had a very positive experience. Coming from a larger, more well-oiled student section, it was nice to see other student sections to put into perspective how fortunate we are in the ZonaZoo. It was great to see the student sections who have no funding have a passion for ensuring that their section succeeds, and to provide them with tips on how to grow their sections even if they did not have that funding to get their ideas off the ground."
- Kortney, University of Arizona, Zona Zoo Executive Director
"Coming into the convention I was so excited to learn new things to help improve our student section. It never even occurred to me that I would be able to help others improve THEIR student sections. I could not be more thankful for the amazing weekend spent learning, collaborating, and working with other people just like me to make student sections all across America amazing!
- Natalie, Indiana University, Crimson Guard President
“I had the time of my life at the 2016 NCSSA Convention. I was fortunate to meet passionate students from across the nation that all shared similar goals for their spirit sections...The speakers were incredibly inspirational and the food was top-notch. Minnesota brought back a fresh perspective and newfound love for student sections from coast to coast. Thank you, NCSSA!”
- Annamarie, University of Minnesota, Barnyard Presiden
The inaugural 2015 NCSSA Convention was held at Indiana State University lasting three days from June 18th - 20th. Schools ranging from Abilene Christian University to Xavier University joined us for a convention that truly made a difference. Featuring guest speaker Sherard Clinkscales, Chairman of the NCAA Sportsmanship Committee and Senior Associate Athletic Director at North Carolina State University. A precedence of high excellence was set by building camaraderie, promoting sportsmanship and boasting the exchange of information through meaningful conversation and brainstorming. A foundation has been set, sculpted by words of all 36 individual attendees, in which future conventions will thrive on. We thank all who attended and hope to see you all next year.
